1.2 Factor of Safety Examples
        Ex. 1.2.1

Example 1.2.1   Factor of Safety

Given: An iron bar of cross-sectional area, A=1 in2, can support a force of P=36,000 lb in tension before it yields (starts to permanently deform).

Req'd: If the Factor of Safety is 2.0 against yielding, what is the Allowable Load, Pallow (the maximum Working Load), that the bar can be subjected to?.

Sol'n:

Pallow = Pf/F.S. = (36,000 lb)/(2.0) = 18,000 lb

In service, the bar should not be loaded to more than Pallow = 18,000 lb.
